Mediastinal and Cranial Abdominal Masses

Vet Immune Professional Products.

KEY POINTS:

  • Natural immunotherapy offers pet owners a safe and effective treatment option for tumors that are often overlooked in traditional veterinary medicine.
  • Natural Immunotherapy and excellent nutritional support can enhance overall health and wellness, leading to increased survival times.

Patient: Zoe

Age/Sex/Breed: 9-year-old spayed female Golden Retriever

History:

Zoe had been having some nonspecific respiratory symptoms along with some loss of appetite and lethargy. Zoe had experienced significant weight loss, weighing only 63 lbs compared to 76 lbs the previous year.

Diagnostics:

10/25/2005 – Chest and abdominal x-rays revealed a cranial mediastinum “kink” in the trachea, indicative of a thoracic mass. There was also evidence of a cranial abdominal mass approximately measuring 3″ by 5″. Zoe also had an extremely low white blood cell count. Further diagnostics, including ultrasound and biopsy, were declined.

Therapy:

The owners selected the treatment option of starting high-dose Vet Immune Professional Tabs as an immune enhancement therapy to reduce tumor load by up-regulating the immune system.

Follow up:

Zoe’s owners continued the Vet Immune Professional Tabs but didn’t schedule follow-up appointments.

03/2/2006 – Zoe was reevaluated after one year of taking the Vet Immune Professional Tabs. X-rays showed no evidence of the previous chest and abdominal masses. Additionally, according to the owner, Zoe had gained 19 pounds in four months, increasing from 63 to 82 pounds. Zoe appeared to be in excellent health with noted improvements in activity level, hair coat, and eye appearance.

Mass

Mass. Mickey's picture.

Mass: Ovoid-shaped

Patient: Mikey

Age/Sex/Breed: 12-year-old neutered male Boston Terrier

History & Diagnostics:

09/23/06 – Mikey was presented to the local emergency clinic for evidence of severe back pain and inability to climb stairs. Radiographs revealed mid-spine intervertebral disc disease and an ovoid-shaped soft tissue mass in the ventral mid-abdomen, centered slightly to the left of the midline and likely arising from the caudal body or tail of the spleen.

Blood work revealed a mildly elevated WBC and borderline anemia.

The mass was approximately 7.5 cm by 4.8 cm in dimension. Wispy soft tissue streaks in the umbilical fat of the ventral abdomen also indicated that the mass was most likely hemorrhaging. An abdominal ultrasound confirmed a spleen mass, and exploratory surgery was scheduled for a future date.

Follow up:

09/26/2006 – I examined Mikey 3 days later. His back symptoms were improving with the therapy prescribed by the emergency clinic. We decided to delay an exploratory for the splenic mass and started Vet Immune Professional Tabs.

10/24/2006 – Reassessment and repeat radiographs dated 10/24/2006 revealed a dramatic reduction in the volume of the splenic mass—now approximately 3.0cm in its maximum dimension. Due to the tremendous success in shrinking the tumor, we decided to delay the surgery and continue treatment with Vet Immune Professional Tabs. In addition, there was noted improvement concerning the spinal disc disease.

Update:

Mikey lived another wonderful two years while on Vet Immune Professional Tabs. The owners were very pleased.

Lytic Bone Lesion

Vet Immune Professional Products.

LYTIC BONE LESION KEY POINTS:

  • Natural Immunotherapy is an important adjunctive therapy for destructive bone lesions.

Patient: Cleo

Age/Sex/Breed: 9-year-old spayed female Greyhound

History:

08/05/2002 – Cleo presented with firm swelling of the left front leg. Radiographs revealed a destructive bone lesion. The local radiologist suggested a probable lytic bone tumor. Fungal infections are rare in this region; no apparent draining tracts suggest a bacterial infection. Cleo began a treatment plan that included administering Rimadyl and Ramaekers Veterinary Immune Tabs. A surgical biopsy, full diagnostic blood screens, and an oncology consult were declined. Cleo’s owners only used the Rimadyl for three weeks.

12/07/02 – Cleo was reassessed approximately three months later and appeared to be doing very well, with only mild limping. Radiographs dated 12/07/2002 revealed that the lytic lesion in the lower radius was regressing.

Follow-up:

03/15/2003 – Radiographs indicated progressive healing was taking place. Cleo could run at full speed and appeared in excellent physical condition. We continued to monitor the case, and radiographs performed on 08/23/2003, 01/02/2004, and 04/17/2004 all showed progressive improvements. Cleo died from unrelated causes in 2005.

Intestinal Lymphosarcoma

Vet Immune Professional Tabs are formulated for therapeutic use in animals as an adjunct to chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation.

INTESTINAL LYMPHOSARCOMA KEY POINTS:

  • Natural Immunotherapy is an integral part of patient support during chemotherapy

Patient: Ivan

Age/Sex/Breed: 7-year-old neutered male Borzoi

History:

Ivan had a prolonged history of weight loss and intestinal symptoms.

Diagnostics:

03/07/2007 – Abdominal ultrasound revealed an extraluminal mass at the iliocecal junction. Exploratory surgery demonstrated a transmural invasive mass tumor of the intestinal tract extending through the intestinal wall and involving the mesentery. Biopsies indicated a transmurally invasive lymphosarcoma. Liver biopsies also revealed multifocal extensive involvement, with lymphosarcoma replacing widespread hepatic architecture. In addition, the mesenteric lymph nodes exhibited moderate suppurative lymphadenitis with sinus histiocytosis and lymphoid hyperplasia.

Therapy:

The tumor was surgically removed on 03/07/2007, and Ivan began chemotherapy along with the administration of Veterinary Immune Tabs as adjuvant therapy. In March of 2007, Ivan weighed 67 lbs and exhibited severe lethargy, depressed affect, difficulty walking, depressed appetite, and signs of pain.

Follow up:

04/08/2008 – After 1 year of treatment with Veterinary Immune Tabs as an adjuvant therapy, the lymphosarcoma is in complete remission. Ivan weighs 110 lbs and exhibits significant improvement in overall health. See the photos below.

Immune-Mediated Ischemic Dermatopathy

Vet Immune Powder and Tabs for Sick Treatment.

IMMUNE-MEDIATED ISCHEMIC DERMATOPATHY KEY POINTS:

  • Natural Immunotherapy can help to modify or suppress the immune response in dermatitis cases
  • Natural Immunotherapy provides another option for clients to address allergic or immune-based skin disorders

Patient: Sallie Age/Sex/Breed: 7-year-old Pomeranian mix

Prior History

Sallie is a 7-year-old Pomeranian mix. Her previous veterinarian first examined her in May ’07. She had a history of chronic ear disease, chronic periodontal disease, and constant paw licking. Her prior vaccine status was recorded as current. She initially responded well to a low-dose oral steroid/antihistamine combination medication. A re-examination in December 2007 revealed a progressive otitis externa and generalized itching. A dental prophylaxis and biopsy of the ear flaps were scheduled.

Diagnostics:

A Tissue Biopsy of the ear revealed a condition called Cell-Poor Vascularitis. This is an ischemic, immune-mediated dermatopathy.

Therapy:

Pentoxyphylline (Trental) therapy was started on 2/08. The initial response was fair. New ulcerated lesions of the feet and face developed. The addition of injectable corticosteroids seems to help the dermal inflammatory response.

Follow-up: Immune-Mediated Ischemic Dermatopathy

12/08 – The pentoxifylline and corticosteroid therapy was providing a declining response. It was decided to take another course of treatment.

02/10/09 – At that time, we started the Vet Immune Professional Tabs along with hypoallergenic canned food. Within two weeks, she began showing decreased facial and ear-flap inflammation. The pentoxifylline had been previously discontinued, and the long-term corticosteroids were tapered down and stopped.

03/10/09 – Sallie is gaining weight, feeling perkier, and getting a healthier hair coat. Most importantly, her extremely painful, irritated, and scarred ear flaps are markedly improved without any topical therapy. She still has some mild, ongoing, itchy dermatitis.

Immune-Mediated Ischemic Dermatopathy

02/10/09: Starting therapy.

and scales.

Immune-Mediated Ischemic Dermatopathy

02/10/09: Starting therapy. Left ear—notice torn ear flap margin,
very sensitive and painful!

Immune-Mediated Ischemic Dermatopathy

02/23/09: After two weeks of therapy, the right ear has
decreased crusts, scale, and redness and is less painful.

Immune-Mediated Ischemic Dermatopathy

02/23/09: After two weeks of therapy, the left ear had
decreased crusts, scales, and redness and was less painful!

Immune-Mediated Ischemic Dermatopathy

03/10/09: After 4 weeks of therapy, the left ear continues to
improve. Decreased scabs and regaining healthier skin coloring.

Immune-Mediated Ischemic Dermatopathy

03/10/09: After 4 weeks of therapy, this Pomeranian mix is
gaining weight, and the hair coat is beginning to shine.

Assessment: Immune-Mediated Ischemic Dermatopathy

Natural immunotherapy is a safe and often very effective alternative therapy for autoimmune skin conditions. The focus is on first supplying the broad array of nutrients required for proper immune function, as supplied with the Veterinary Immune Tabs, and then allowing the active immune ingredients to calm or balance an out-of-control immune system. I like to use the Veterinary Immune Tabs as adjunctive therapy for many types of allergic dermatitis.

Physical Findings:

Redness, swelling, scale, cracking, crusts, hair loss, erosions, and PAIN of the muzzle, eyelids, ear flaps, foot pads, and tail.

Immune-Mediated Ear Flap
Immune-Mediated Ear Flap

Diagnostics:

Diagnosed by a dermatologist as having an Immune-mediated Ear Flap & Tail Vasculitis.

Immune-Mediated Ear Flap

12/28/10 Notice mild swelling and depigmentation around eyelids and muzzle; Ulceration and hair loss of the Tail; Constantly bleeding Right ear flap; Pre-therapy: The ear margins are swelling, along with erosions, crusts, and scaling. The Ear Flaps are very painful.

Therapy:

She started Veterinary Immune Tabs on 12/28/10 and showed improvement within 2 weeks. The owner was also instructed to start a novel protein diet at that time.

Traditional Therapy:

NOT USED. It would have included some of the following: doxycycline/niacinamide combination, Immunosuppressive drugs: pentoxifylline, topical tacrolimus, oral cyclosporine, and topical and oral corticosteroids.

Follow Up:

01/18/11 Right Ear Flap. Good hair regrowth, healing erosions, resolving crusts, and scale Ear Flaps are MUCH LESS painful!; Left Ear Flap. Healing erosions, good hair regrowth, Less swelling, and less pain.

04/11/11 Right Ear Flap. Four months into therapy, Earflap borders continue to heal—no pain, minimal scaling or redness. Tail: good hair regrowth, no bleeding, and healed ulcers.

After just three weeks on the Veterinary Immune Tabs, we saw a marked improvement in her condition. There was good hair regrowth, decreased pain and swelling, and healing crusts and erosions. Her owners were very happy with her progress!

Update:

Just 3 1/2 months into therapy, Princess continues to improve and feels excellent. What good natural immune modulation Vet-I-Tabs can accomplish with these difficult immune-mediated skin conditions is incredible.

Update: 02/22/2015

Princess is alive and doing well. Her ear flap disease is well-controlled. She did eventually need to have the end of her tail amputated due to damaged vascular beds. She continues to be maintained at a low dose with veterinary immune tabs and a tiny amount of an oral corticosteroid.
