On Sept 16, 2025, Miles went in for a dental cleaning. He had been having trouble with Tachypnea (an abnormally rapid breathing rate at rest) at night over the past 5 months and was seen by 4 different vets, who found no etiology (the study of the causes, origins, or underlying factors that lead to a specific disease, medical condition, or abnormal behavior) for his symptoms. While intubating, the surgeon discovered a tumor on his soft palate. She removed it and sent it off to pathology. Miles’ symptoms obviously ceased from this point on. Biopsy of the tumor showed malignant adenocarcinoma (an aggressive form of cancer that originates in the glandular tissues or the epithelial lining of organs).
We immediately consulted with Oncology. They ordered a CT scan and a further biopsy of the local lymph node—more bad news. Abnormal cells were found in the retropharyngeal lymph, and the tumor margins were dirty. We continued to obtain multiple consultations with a radiologist, surgeons, and oncologists. All shared the same prognosis: terminal, with up to 6 months to live, maybe nine if we have surgery removing local lymph, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. This, with an estimated cost of $20,000.
